Pokie expenditure up in last quarter of 2014

More money was spent on pub and club pokies in the last three months of 2014 compared with the previous quarter ended September 2014, according to figures compiled by the Department of Internal Affairs.
Spending rose $2.3 million, from $207.8 million at the end of September to $210.1 million at 31 December 2014.

The spending is captured through the electronic monitoring of non-casino gaming machines (EMS), which became fully operational in March 2007, enabling the Department to track and monitor operations, ensure the integrity of games and the accurate accounting of money. Licence holders between the third and fourth quarters of 2014 fell from 321 to 312, venues declined from 1300 to 1287 and the number of gaming machines decreased from 16,814 to 16,717.
