17 March 2025

The 2024 National Risk Assessment (NRA) has been officially released by the New Zealand Police Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU). This assessment outlines the latest money laundering and terrorism financing risks facing New Zealand and provides essential insights for reporting entities under the AML/CFT Act 2009.

Reporting entities—businesses captured under section 5 of the AML/CFT Act, including financial institutions, law firms, real estate agents, casinos, and other designated non-financial businesses and professions—must review and update their AML/CFT risk assessments to reflect the findings of the NRA. The document identifies key risks, including criminal proceeds from fraud, drug crime, and tax non-compliance, and highlights vulnerable sectors that are most susceptible to misuse by criminals.

The  2024 NRA is now available on the New Zealand Police website: National Risk Assessment (NRA) | New Zealand Police
