Use of Royal Arms, Names, and Images
On 2 September 2024, the Governor-General approved an Order-in-Council to revoke the redundant Commercial Use of Royal Photographs Rules 1955, 1959, and 1962. These Rules, which were badly out of date, have been superseded by definitive Guidelines issued by the Lord Chamberlain’s Office.
The Guidelines summarise the legal position governing the use, for commercial purposes, of the Royal Arms, Royal Devices, Emblems and Titles and of photographs, portraits, engravings, effigies and busts of The King and Members of the Royal Family. Guidance on advertising in which reference is made to a Member of the Royal Family, and on the use of images of Members of the Royal Family on articles for sale, is also provided.
The Lord Chamberlain’s Office can provide further guidance if it is unclear whether the use of “Arms and images”, etc, imply a Royal connection.
