This report presents the election statistics for district, city councils and regional council elections held on the weekend of 9-10 October 2004. There have been six local authority elections since the 1989 restructuring of local government, and the report covers the patterns of change and stability of more than a decade of local authority elections.
These statistics reflect recent changes such as the introduction of STV at the local elections in 2004, and use some new tools such as maps to more vividly depict regional differences in voter turnout (see Local Authority Election Statistics 2001).
Note: The data in this publication has been carefully checked to ensure accuracy, but due to the volume and large number of sources involved in the data collection, there may be some errors that are beyond our control.
