Applications are now open for the Community Internship Programme (CIP), which provides grants for highly skilled professionals and their employers to lend a hand to community organisations. Interns are ‘loaned out’ from their full-time employers to undertake capacity-building projects in community organisations during three to six month internships.

This year’s funding round has allocated $268,000 for nine internships, each the equivalent of six months’ full time employment.

The programme aims to build the capacity of community groups and strengthen relationships between the public and private sectors, by offering professionals a community alternative to secondment or sabbatical.

The Stewart Island/Rakiura Community Environment Trust (SIRCET) is currently hosting Mary Chittenden, an employee of the Southland Department of Conservation. Mary’s help with strategic and operational planning for the organisation will contribute to the management of the Halfmoon Bay Habitat Restoration Project.

The closing date for the upcoming CIP funding round is 12 October 2006. For information on applying to the CIP, visit Community Internship Programme, or call 0800 824 824.
