Peace and Disarmament Education Trust 2007-2008 Funding

Projects with a focus on promoting peace are invited to submit applications to receive funding assistance.

The closing date for applications to the second round of funding to the Peace and Disarmament Education Trust has been extended to 29 October 2007. Applications must be submitted by this date to be eligible for this funding round.

Over the past 17 years, the Peace and Disarmament Education Trust has distributed over $1 million to various peace initiatives.

Administered by the Department of Internal Affairs, the Trust was set up with money received by the New Zealand Government from France, in recognition of the events surrounding the 1985 bombing of the Greenpeace flagship, Rainbow Warrior.

The Minister for Disarmament and Arms Control, Hon Phil Goff, chairs the Trust. It meets twice a year to distribute money to groups and individuals who promote a greater understanding of international peace, arms control, disarmament and the issues surrounding the resolution of international conflict.

Proposed projects must be based in New Zealand, although in exceptional circumstances this may be reviewed. Past recipients have included academics, grassroots organisations, and individuals.

Official application forms can be obtained by calling the Department of Internal Affairs on freephone 0800 824 824, or can be downloaded from www.dia.govt.nz.
