Internal Affairs welcomes Inland Revenue Department number initiative

11/2/2008

Internal Affairs welcomes the launch of an initiative by Inland Revenue that will offer a new, more secure service for the public applying for IRD numbers. From 18 February people can apply for an IRD number at AA centres and Postshops around the country.

The new process uses the Government’s Evidence of Identity (EOI) Standard developed by the Department of Internal Affairs. The EOI Standard is a good practice guide for positively establishing an individual’s identity.

Sue Boland, Identity Services Strategic Development Manager, Department of Internal Affairs, says the EOI Standard will contribute to preventing identity theft and fraud.

“As the first agency formally piloting the EOI Standard, Inland Revenue has achieved an important milestone with today’s announcement. They are setting a high standard for future proof of identity initiatives by ensuring that government held information is accurate and of high integrity.”

Ms Boland says the Standard will eventually apply to all government services that entail identity-related risk.

“We acknowledge and congratulate Inland Revenue on their effort in bringing this initiative to the public rollout stage,” she says.

The Department of Internal Affairs will continue to support Inland Revenue and other agencies using the EOI Standard in the future, by monitoring their implementation of the standard.
