Disarmament Education UN Implementation Fund open for applications

Applications are now open for the Disarmament Education United Nations Implementation Fund’s 2010 funding round.

The Fund assists New Zealand non-government organisations (NGOs) in implementing the recommendations of the 2002 United Nations’ Study on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Education. The Study focuses on the need for education and training to achieve the ultimate goal of general and complete disarmament under effective international control.

The Fund makes grants to provide for costs related to the administration and running of education programmes by New Zealand NGOs, which promote greater public understanding of disarmament matters.

World Peace March Aotearoa-New Zealand was granted $20,000 in 2009 to assist with the costs of events and activities associated with the World March for Peace and Non-violence. Beginning in New Zealand, this 90-day march involved people in more than 90 countries calling for the end of war and nuclear weapons, and the elimination of violence of all kinds.

In 2009 the Fund also provided core funding for disarmament education to the Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament ($30,000) and the International Association of Lawyers Against Nuclear Arms ($20,000).

Applications to the Fund must be received by 5pm on 31 May 2010. These will be considered by the Public Advisory Committee on Disarmament and Arms Control.

To obtain an application form, or to learn more about the Fund, visit the Department of Internal Affairs’ website: www.dia.govt.nz or call freephone 0800 824 824.
