Rainbow Warrior funds to benefit conservation

Environmental and conservation focused projects can now apply to receive funding through the Pacific Development and Conservation Trust. Applications close 1 March 2007.

Twice a year, the Trust distributes funds to New Zealand and South Pacific community groups and individuals for projects that enhance and conserve their environment and heritage, and promote peaceful, sustainable development in the South Pacific.

The Trust was set up with money the New Zealand Government received from France, following the destruction of the Rainbow Warrior in 1986. Administered by the Department of Internal Affairs, the Trust distributes about $320,000 each year.

Past projects supported by the Trust include: efforts to re-establish the Kiwi, Tuatara and other indigenous New Zealand wildlife and plant species; viewing platforms in areas of environmental significance; conservation books, pamphlets and educational resource kits on pollution and marine life; the study of freshwater eel habitats; and the eradication of pests from reserves and sanctuaries.

In the South Pacific, the Trust has supported invasive species research and eradication, and provided equipment and educational material for environmental conservation projects.
