Peace and Disarmament Education Trust open for applications

The Peace and Disarmament Education Trust is now receiving applications for the first funding round of 2009.

The Trust’s objective is to advance education and thereby promote international peace, arms control and disarmament.

The Trust provides funding for project grants and postgraduate scholarships.

Most project grants are for less than $5000 to fund projects that promote greater public understanding of disarmament and arms control matters and the issues surrounding the resolution of international conflict.

In 2008, the Trust granted $4000 to the Giving Voice Trust to aid in the development of an educational resource kit for New Zealand secondary schools. This kit encourages students to think about social values and decision-making and how these impact on people’s lives.

TMI Pictures were granted $10,000 in 2007 to help with production costs for the documentary ‘War With No Guns’. This film tells the story of how the New Zealand Defence Force contributed to ending the Bougainville civil war through peaceful means.

Applications to the first funding round, for project grants only, must be received prior to 31 May 2009. The second funding round, for project grants and scholarships, closes on 30 September 2009.

To obtain an application form, or to learn more about the Trust, visit the Department of Internal Affairs’ website: www.dia.govt.nz or phone 0800 824 824.
