Media Release 26 February 2009

Pacific Development and Conservation Trust open for expressions of interest

The Pacific Development and Conservation Trust is now receiving expressions of interest for the 2009 funding round.

The Trust’s vision is a peaceful, sustainable Pacific region where all cultures flourish and the natural environment is respected. Each year, the Trust makes grants to charitable projects benefiting New Zealand or South Pacific countries.

The Pacific Development and Conservation Trust was established in 1989 with money received from France in recognition of events surrounding the destruction of the Rainbow Warrior vessel in 1986.

Expressions of interest must be received prior to 31 March 2009. These will be considered by the Trustees prior to a full project application being requested.

In 2008, the Trust made grants totalling $260,555.

The Otanewainuku Kiwi Trust was granted $12,805 to fund their pest control programme. The Trust is working to eradicate pests in the 1200 hectares of the Otanewainuku conservation area, in order to protect the critically endangered North Island Brown Kiwi population.

The Fred Hollows Foundation of New Zealand received a grant of $35,000 for their project strengthening eye care networks in Papua New Guinea. The project will bring together eye nurses, trained by the Foundation and working in remote areas of Papua New Guinea, to learn from each other and from eye care specialists. They will be trained in setting up a cost recovery spectacles system and will receive seed stock to begin supplying spectacles to their communities.

To obtain an expression of interest form, or to learn more about the Trust, visit the Department of Internal Affairs’ website: www.dia.govt.nz or phone 0800 824 824.
