Peace and Disarmament Trust calls for applications

3/9/2004

The Peace and Disarmament Education Trust (PADET) is once again calling for applications.

Over the past 16 years, PADET has distributed more than a million dollars to peace initiatives.

Administered by the Department of Internal Affairs, the trust was set up with money the New Zealand Government received from France in recognition of events surrounding the destruction of the Rainbow Warrior.

Three times a year the Trust, chaired by the Minister for Disarmament and Arms Control Marian Hobbs, distributes the income from this money to groups and individuals who promote greater understanding of international peace, arms control and disarmament, and the issues surrounding the resolution of international conflict.

Successful applicants have come from a wide range of backgrounds and have included academics, grassroots organisations and keen individuals who are promoting a good cause with long-term benefit.

Applicants must be based in New Zealand and, although there are some exceptions, projects should also be undertaken in this country rather than overseas.

In the past, the Trust has funded various projects and activities including:
  • A peace seminar and workshops together with an exhibition of photographic portraits of Gandhi, Jinnah, Nehru and Patel
  • The commemoration of Hiroshima Day at the Peace Flame at the Wellington City Botanical Gardens
  • A contribution towards advertising and printing costs for a Peace March on Race Unity Day
  • Access radio programmes “Women of Peace” and workshops, detailing life histories of women committed to building a civil society
  • Organising arms control and disarmament seminars
  • International conferences on human rights, justice, self- determination, women's rights and environmental development.
Applications for the next funding round close 30 September 2004.

Applications need to be made on an official application form which can be obtained by contacting the Trusts Advisor, Department of Internal Affairs, PO Box 805, Wellington, or down loaded from the website here: Peace and Disarmament Education Trust (PADET) or e-mail trusts@dia.govt.nz or telephone (04) 495-9387.
