2023 Digital Violent Extremism Transparency Report released

Te Tari Taiwhenua Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) has released its annual Digital Violent Extremism Transparency Report for 2023.
This report will help the New Zealand public to better understand how DIA works to identify and address online violent extremism by providing an overview of the terrorist and violent extremist content that was reviewed and investigated by the Department throughout 2023.
Report highlighted a number of key findings:
Reporting
- 886 URLs were referred to us in 2023.
- 38% of the URLs referred were objectionable.
- 845 unique URLs reported.
- 25% increase in URLs referred to the DVET between 2022 and 2023.
- Public URLs referred increased 4% since 2022.
- NGO URLs referred increased 343% since 2022.
- Most commonly referred platforms were X/Twitter, Telegram, and TikTok.
- Tiktok removed 81% of reported content prior to DIA formally requesting it to be removed or as a result of an informal request.
- The most commonly reported ideology type was identity-motivated, specifically, white-identity.
- 54% of URLs referred related to the Christchurch terror attacks.
- Informal requests for unique URLs = 245 (12% increase since 2022)
- Content removed by platform prior to request from DIA = 136 (5% increase since 2022)
- Formal takedown notices issued = 26 relating to 41 URLs (8 relating to 12 URLs issued in 2022)
