Peace and Disarmament Education Trust open for applications

The Peace and Disarmament Education Trust is now receiving applications for the first funding round of 2010.

The Trust’s objective is to advance education and thereby promote international peace, arms control and disarmament.

The Trust provides funding for project grants and postgraduate scholarships.

Most project grants are for less than $5000 to fund projects that promote greater public understanding of disarmament and arms control matters and the issues surrounding the resolution of international conflict.

In 2009, the Trust granted the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War $3000 to inform the medical community in Papua New Guinea about disarmament with the overall aim of preventing injury and suffering from firearms.

The Trust also granted $3118 in 2009 to Claudia Pond Eyley to distribute her documentary ‘Kit & Maynie – Tea, Scones and Nuclear Disarmament’ to New Zealand schools and libraries. This film tells the story of Waiheke Island based peace activists Kit Nelson and Maynie Thompson.

Applications to the first funding round, for project grants only, must be received by 5pm on 31 May 2010.

The Trust makes grants for projects and postgraduate scholarships during the second funding round, which opens on 1 August 2010 and closes on 31 October 2010.

To obtain an application form, or to learn more about the Trust, visit the Department of Internal Affairs’ website: www.dia.govt.nz or phone 0800 824 824.
