DIA announces proposed new management structure

29 August 2024

Te Tari Taiwhenua, Department of Internal Affairs, is announcing more details about the first phase of its organisational change programme.

It’s proposed that under the new structure, the Department’s seven existing branches would be replaced by five new branches, led by five Deputy Secretaries. Changes would also be made to the functions that sit in each branch.

“I am looking to create an effective, leaner management structure that better aligns functions, strengthens lines of accountability, and reduces costs. I believe what we are proposing is a sensible way of delivering efficiency savings while looking to the future,” says the Secretary of Internal Affairs Paul James.

DIA has today invited staff feedback.

“Over the past few days, I have started to meet with impacted kamahi about these changes. The professionalism I’ve seen is a testament to the continued commitment our staff bring to work every day.

“My message as we enter three weeks of consultation, is that we will be continuing to listen carefully to what our people have to say, ensuring they have access to clear information so we can deliver a fair change process that will future proof us for years to come.

“We will be in a better position in October to say how many people will be impacted by these changes. The second phase, in 2025, will involve an ongoing focus on cost reduction and addressing duplication of services,” Paul James said.

Consultation closes on 19 September 2024. Final decisions are expected to be announced in late October 2024.
