Archetype Productions in Christchurch was awarded a CIP internship last year. Archetype is a community media centre providing technology resources and post-production facilities to people who might otherwise not have access to this type of technology. Archetype staff are “bursting with creative energy and ideas,” but they needed intern Bernard MacMillan to anchor those creative skills in a community business sense.

Bernard, from the Rowley Resource Centre, is helping Archetype to set up its business infrastructure. He extended their financial options by setting up face-to-face meetings with funders. Bernard said that many community organisations struggle with the relationship aspect of securing funding.

Through the internship, he is developing management policies and procedures, health and safety guidelines and a community enterprise business plan.

By helping to set the foundations of the organisation, Bernard is bringing business structures up to the level of the staff’s creativity that already exist. Sarah Gray, office manager at Archetype, said Bernard has been “Brilliant! The ongoing procedures he’s put in place will be a real asset to our organisation.”

The closing date for the upcoming CIP funding round is 12 October 2006. For information on applying to the CIP, visit the Department of Internal Affairs website at:
