Peace trust calls for applications

Projects with a peaceful focus are urged to submit their applications to receive government funding. Applications to the Peace and Disarmament Education Trust must be submitted by 29 September 2006 to be eligible for this year’s funding round.

The Trust has distributed over $1 million to various peace initiatives over the past 17 years.

Administered by the Department of Internal Affairs, the Trust was set up with money received by the New Zealand government from France, in recognition of the events surrounding the 1985 bombing of Greenpeace’s flagship, the Rainbow Warrior.

The Minister for Disarmament and Arms Control, Hon Phil Goff, chairs the Trust. It meets twice a year to distribute money to groups and individuals who promote a greater understanding of international peace, arms control and disarmament, and the issues surrounding the resolution of international conflict.

Proposed projects must be based in New Zealand, although in exceptional circumstances this may be reviewed. Past recipients have included academics, grassroots organisations, and individuals.

Official application forms can be obtained by calling The Department of Internal Affairs on freephone 0800 824 824, or can be downloaded from Peace and Disarmament Education Trust (PADET)
