Identity website launched to help reduce identity theft

19 September 2011

A new website (www.identity.govt.nz) has been launched to help people avoid becoming victims of identity theft.

Identity crime is a growing problem worldwide and New Zealanders need to be aware how valuable their identity information is to themselves and to criminals, says the Department of Internal Affairs General Manager Identity and Data Services, Andrea Gray.

“This website provides guidance and tools to assist people to protect their identity and information about what to do if you think you may be the victim of identity theft. Many New Zealanders are unaware of the risks they face from simple actions, such as throwing out bills or not using privacy settings on social networking sites.

“The website is a cross-government initiative, led by the Department of Internal Affairs, to reduce this risk and increase awareness of the problem.”

The website includes an online tool, the Identity Theft Checklist, which collates information from a number of sources to assist people who think they may be a victim of identity theft, or who have lost an important document, such as a birth certificate. The Checklist can also be downloaded as a document that includes case studies and tips to protect your identity.

The Department of Internal Affairs estimates that identity crime may cost the New Zealand economy $209 million every year and affect up to 133,000 people. Identity crime includes identity theft, fraud and creating false identities.
