Pacific Development and Conservation Trust open for expressions of interest

The Pacific Development and Conservation Trust is now receiving expressions of interest for the 2012 funding round.

The Trust’s vision is a peaceful, sustainable Pacific region where all cultures flourish and the natural environment is respected. Each year, the Trust makes grants to charitable projects benefiting New Zealand or Pacific countries.

The Pacific Development and Conservation Trust was established in 1989 with money received from the French government in recognition of events surrounding the destruction of the Rainbow Warrior vessel.

Applying for funding is a two stage process. Applicants must submit an Expression of Interest prior to 31 March. These will be considered by the Trust and successful applicants will be invited to submit a full project application. The closing date for full applications is 18 July.

In 2011, the Trust made grants totalling $158,764 to 14 projects in New Zealand and throughout the Pacific region.

The Mangaia Cultural and Historical Society received $14,000 to restore a New Zealand colonial period residence in the Cook Islands and open it as a museum, artists centre and tourism visitor centre to encourage arts, tourism and heritage activities.

With its grant of $10,325, Para Kore Marae Inc aims to divert organic waste from landfill through the use of worm farms on marae.

In 2009, the Fred Hollows Foundation New Zealand used its grant of $20,000 to extend an eye health survey to Samoa and the Solomon Islands.
