2004 Churchill Fellowships Announced

    16/03/2004

Five New Zealanders will soon head overseas on specialised research projects thanks to the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust.

This year’s fellows have a diverse range of interests and expertise, including the prevention of elder abuse, the social problems of Asian students in New Zealand, business development, managing land contamination, and sustainable transport.

    They are:

    • Rewi Alley Chinese School principal Qiangfu Jin, who is investigating issues facing young Asian students
    • Age Concern support co-ordinator Betty Jeanne Eydt, who will study elder abuse and neglect prevention strategies
    • Yola Macken from Enterprise Waitakere, who will visit businesses in the United Kingdom and the United States that encourage an entrepreneurial culture
    • Farmer Graham McBride, who will investigate how contaminated land is managed in Australia and the United States
    • North Shore City Council policy advisor Bernadine Walsh, who will travel to the United Kingdom to study sustainable transport policy.

A list of recipients and a brief description of their projects is attached.

The Department of Internal Affairs administers the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust.

More than 600 fellowships have been granted since the trust was set up in 1965 as a memorial to Sir Winston Churchill.

Sir Winston saw great value in New Zealanders going overseas to develop a particular area of expertise, as it enables them to make a greater contribution to their communities back home.

Former Churchill fellows include Dame Catherine Tizard, entertainer Mika, broadcaster Sharon Crosbie, actor Miranda Harcourt, and writer and performer Jo Randerson.

Applications for 2005 Fellowships close on 31 July 2004.

Fellowships are not normally granted for academic or professional qualifications and fellows must return to their jobs in New Zealand when they have completed their projects.

Application forms are available from the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust, PO Box 805, Wellington, e-mail trusts@dia.govt.nz, phone (04) 495 9445.
