Dog Safety website
(Decommissioned December 2024)
Background
The Dog Safety website was launched in 2004 as part of a public education campaign targeting dog owners, school children, teachers, local councils, community organisations, ministers and the media. Its purpose was to raise awareness of issues around dog safety and changes to the dog control laws, and to influence public perceptions and behaviour around dogs, especially children, parents and dog owners.
It was accompanied by a brochure called Charlie’s Dog Safety Tips for Kids, as part of a wider public education campaign, following several high-profile dog attacks.
The Dog Box teaching resource was originally distributed to all New Zealand primary schools around October 2005. It contained a video, a set of teachers’ notes, a board game, stickers and a take-home information sheet, and continued to be available, and frequently requested, through the website until the it was decommissioned in 2024. The video files were available on the website since July 2008.
